Reports offer conflicting views of war in Afghanistan

Grim warnings of an unending war and of Afghan civilians dying and fleeing in ever increasing numbers paint a gloomy picture ahead of a much rosier review expected Thursday as U.S. President Barack Obama takes stock of the surge that pits more than 100,000 U.S. troops against the Taliban insurgency.

The official Pentagon assessment is expected to say the war is being won and that the President will be able to deliver on his pledge to start pulling U.S. troops from Afghanistan next summer.

But a rare public statement from the International Red Cross and leaked details of secret U.S. intelligence reviews suggest otherwise.
