Palestinians seek UNESCO recognition for Church of the Nativity | MontrealGazette.com

UNITED NATIONS — The Muslim leadership of the Palestinian Authority pushed Monday to have the reputed birthplace of Jesus Christ designated as a United Nations World Heritage Site — a status the world body only applies to cultural icons in independent states.

The application comes as Palestinian diplomats around the world have found increasing success in persuading countries to recognize Palestine as an independent state, with more than half of the UN General Assembly’s 192 countries now on board following a recent surge of support from Latin American countries.

Elevating the international status of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem would give the Palestinian Authority impetus in its effort to establish a state, members of that government believe.
