(Media-Newswire.com) – Washington — An open, secure Internet that is accessible to all is crucial to peace and economic prosperity, says Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
“We are convinced that an open Internet fosters long-term peace, progress and prosperity,” Clinton said in a speech delivered February 15 at George Washington University in Washington. An Internet that can be blocked and censored, she said, “can cut off opportunities for peace and progress and discourage innovation and entrepreneurship.”

Five years in prison for blogging seems an unjust sentence. In the wake of the popular uprising’s victory in Egypt, other Middle Eastern governments seem to be clamping down on any possible signs of unrest, especially from young people. This may mean the imposition of harsh restrictions on freedom of speech, however, as this case in Syria demonstrates. Tal al-Molouhi, a 19-year-old high school student, was arrested late in 2009 for blogging and was sentenced to five years in jail earlier this week on the charge of revealing information to a foreign country.
