Rudaw | Protest Over Magazine Article Wreaks Havoc in Erbil

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Hundreds of protesters demonstrated in Iraqi Kurdistan’s capital on Tuesday, attacking a guard post at Kurdish parliament, a liquor store, a social club and a television station.

The protest was over an article in a local magazine that many deemed “blasphemous” and resulted in the injury of demonstrators and members of the security forces; no one was fatally harmed.

The magazine Chirpa published a Facebook post by Halmat Goran, a Kurd residing in Europe, where he has an imaginary conversation with God. Goran also posted a video on YouTube showing him tearing pages that contained Anfal and Nesaa verses from the Quran.
