Urgent! Stop War 11 a.m. Nov. 11, New Haven | Greater New Haven Council

The Greater New Haven Peace Council urges you to join a vigil Wednesday Nov. 11 at 11 AM, corner College and Chapel. Many countries are already at war.

US Peace Organizations agreed NOVEMBER 11, the end of World War 1, Veterans’ Day, should be a Day of GLOBAL ACTIONS!

We have united on these demands:
1. Immediate diplomatic negotiations to end the conflict in Syria involving all interested parties, especially the SYRIAN GOVERNMENT.
2. Removal of all NATO forces from the states bordering Russia. Dismantle NATO!
3. Remove ALL foreign troops from Afghanistan.
4. Demand an end to US strategy for global domination.

The Greater New Haven Peace Council URGES EVERY LOCALITY TO HOLD VIGILS OR SOME PUBLIC ACTION.

NOV. 11 IS A DAY DEVOTED TO END WAR! WHETHER YOU ARE ONE, FIVE OR MORE, YOU CAN HOLD THE SIGN ALOFT: STOP WORLD WAR 3.

TOGETHER WHEREVER WE ARE, WE MUST RAISE OUR VOICES. TOGETHER!

Our world is at a critically dangerous juncture: the possibility of a military, even a thermo-nuclear, confrontation between NATO, led by the United States, and Russia. These nations each possess thousands of nuclear weapons on missiles aimed at each other on hair trigger alert. The militaries of the two nuclear superpowers are once again facing each other, this time in Eastern Europe, especially in Ukraine, and in Syria. And tensions are increasing each passing day.

In addition to the war on Syria, on the western borders of Russia another dangerous war is going on. NATO is expanding its forces into countries neighboring Russia. All the borderland governments now allow those NATO and US military forces onto their territory to run threatening NATO military exercises only a few miles from major Russian cities. This causes a great deal of tension for the Russian government and people, as it would naturally do the same for the US government and us if Russian forces were stationed on the US-Mexico and US-Canada borders carrying out military exercises a few miles from major American cities.

Either of the Syria or Eastern Europe situations can easily lead to a direct confrontation between the US and its NATO allies, on the one hand, and Russia on the other; a confrontation that has the potential of escalating into a nuclear war with disastrous consequences for all the world. It is because of this dangerous situation that we are addressing you, our neighbors. Our own government, the media and even the peace movement are paying scant attention to the dangers that threaten the whole existence of humanity on a global scale today. At best, they are saying to the US and Russia “a plague on both your houses,” criticizing both sides for equally increasing the tensions. This, in our view, is a false story and, more importantly, an ineffective, response that ignores the urgency of the existing threat. Moreover, by bestowing blame in equal measure, it masks the real causes: The effort by the US, as the sole remaining superpower, to unilaterally dominate the whole world, to violate international law and our own Constitution. It stems from US actions to illegally and violently overthrow foreign governments, for example, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Honduras, Yemen – and many others – and now Syria. Each of these actions has led to massive violence, chaos and together the creation of millions of refugees fleeing for their lives.

We have the obligation to say our government: STOP! Stop and Obey your own and international laws! Stop and Respect the human right to peace! Stop and Respect the right of people to choose their own government!
