De- or Re-Militarization in Colombia Prospects in the Post-peace Accords Context | FOR Peace Presence

Will the end of the armed conflict mean peace for Colombia? The peace negotiations in Colombia are likely to be finalized in the coming months. This is an exciting step forward for a country that has lived with over 50 years of armed conflict. Nevertheless, the work of creating long-term, sustainable peace is far from over. Currently, Colombia has no plans to decrease the size of the army or its budget, Colombia’s military expertise is being outsourced to other countries, and obligatory military service for Colombia’s youth will continue. In this webinar long-time scholars and activists explore the challenges and prospects for ending not only war, but the militarization that makes it possible. Sponsored by FOR Peace Presence, North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA), and American Friends Service Committee (AFSC).
