‘Grateful, humble’ new UN chief pledges ‘to serve most vulnerable’ | The Portugal News

António Guterres, the former prime minister of Portugal who on Thursday was unanimously recommended by the Security Council of the United Nations as the organisation’s next secretary-general, said that he felt “gratitude and humility” and pledged to “serve the most vulnerable” in the “terrible complexity” of today’s world.

Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon, he promised to “serve the most vulnerable, the victims of conflicts, of terrorism, of rights violations, of poverty, of injustices.”
