Nuclear Negotiations Are Not a Real Estate Deal | PeaceAction

Today Russia rebuffed President-Elect Trump’s suggestion that he would consider lifting sanctions against Russia in exchange for a nuclear arms agreement.  Paul Kawika Martin, senior director for policy and political affairs, with Peace Action (the nation’s largest grassroots peace organization), made the following statement:

“Once again, this past weekend President-elect Trump tried to conduct nuclear weapons foreign policy in 140 characters—this time treating nuclear weapons as a real estate deal, but Russia’s tepid response proves his folly.

“With Russia and the U.S. holding about 95% of the world’s nuclear stockpile and set to spend $1 trillion over the next 30 years, the two countries need serious proposals and dialogue with the aim to reduce the pricey stockpiles that tend to make the world less safe.  Unfortunately, President Putin refuses to discuss further reductions since the successful New START Treaty was signed.”
