Nothing stands between the president and the nuclear codes. In fact, the president always has the codes in tow, in the hands of a military attaché. Our current president’s finger on the red button illustrates a much larger problem. One person should not have absolute authority to end civilization. There are simply no “right hands” for nuclear weapons.
We must rein in presidential authority to create a world safe from nuclear weapons. Two members of Congress, Rep. Ted Lieu and Sen. Ed Markey, have proposed legislation to prevent the U.S. president from starting a nuclear war without a declaration of war by Congress. Officially endorsing the bill, PSR Executive Director Jeff Carter said, “The Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017 is a wise and necessary step to lessen the chance these weapons will ever be used.”
PSR is part of a network of 18 organizations that have gathered more than 130,000 signatures on a petition supporting this legislation. If you haven’t already signed this joint petition, please sign it now. They expect to deliver the signatures to Congresspeople by March 27.
