The War Resister’s League has announced an evening of dessert, drinks, and music in honor of prison abolitionist Mariame Kaba and Palestinian activist Rasmea Odeh. Meet Mariame who will attend and accept WRL’s 2017 Peace Award and celebrate Rasmea who, unable to travel to New York at this time, will accept the Grace Paley Lifetime Achievement Award from Chicago.
Learn more about Rasmea and Mariame’s inspiring work and RSVP by visiting the WRL event page on Facebook. If you’re not on Facebook, you can let them know you’re coming by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
WRL’s 2017 Peace Award Recipient, Mariame Kaba, is a Black feminist, abolitionist, and freedom dreamer. Mariame is being honored for her 20 years organizing in Chicago, striving to dismantle the prison industrial complex and dreaming of a world where Black women and girls can be free.
WRL’s Grace Paley Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient, Rasmea Odeh, is a Palestinian activist, organizer, and force of nature. This year, they honor Rasmea for embodying “Resistance Lives Forever,” for five decades of resisting Israeli occupation despite imprisonment, torture, and solitary confinement. While Rasmea will not be here in person, you can view the award-giving video from WRL friends and family in Chicago!
Attendees are asked to give a sliding scale admission of $10-$20 at the door to sustain the movement, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
The location is off the accessible Canal St 6 train in New York City and is accessible via elevators in both front and back of the building.
