Reporters for The New York Times recently completed an extraordinary interactive investigation into a chemical attack in Douma, Syria, which ran on the front page, and have proved for the Nth time Assadist mass murder.

Article two: Virtual Crime Scene Nails Assad
The revelations are sadly way too late to help the community there. They’ve long since surrendered, and most were evacuated to Idlib, now Syria’s Gaza.
The “anti-imperialists” will no doubt have an explanation. Like “It’s the New York Times;” “elite capitalists are lying so the U.S. can regime-change Syria,” and don’t forget “Axis Of Evil,” “pipelines,” “The Russia Game;” etc.
The Free Syrian Army (non-jihadist) forces, called the Southern Front (near Jordan), have been supplied for years by the U.S., but the aid came with strings. The U.S. demanded it refrain from fights against Assad even in mid-2015 when they could have sent Assad forces reeling. The only real interest the U.S. had in Syria was in defeating ISIS, so it ordered them to do nothing. With ISIS gone the U.S. has completely lost interest in the Southern Front. Trump announced that he’s stopping aid to them. They’re on their own.
Douma gone. The Southern Front isolated, Idlib bombed daily and mostly run by jihadist gangs, the Kurdish area Afrin under Turkish occupation. U.S. forces in a swath of the north. Not much remains of Free Syria
The only bit of good news this month was that Trump relented and restored money going to the White Helmets.
What are the historical parallels? I’m thinking the Spanish civil war. The “Democracies” let the Republic die, even had an arms embargo on the Republic as Hitler and Mussolini sent in soldiers and planes.
In 1939 Barcelona fell to Franco in January, Madrid in April and that was it. It was a huge victory for fascism. The democracies and the Soviet Union then tried appeasement full throttle. It was never enough. Brimming with confidence Hitler invaded Poland.
Today, the massive number of refugees from Syria has destabilized Europe, helping the fascists rise in country after country. It played no small role in Trump’s election. At least in Spain in the ‘30’s the Left fought back. Outside of some anarchists help for the Kurds, today’s Left did squat in Syria or worse slandered the heroes. We’ll all pay for this in one way or another.
